Another popular type of substance to search for is fossils. In particular, trilobites are quite plentiful in many areas of the country and offer visitors a way to literally dig up the past. Trilobites are extinct, prehistoric invertebrates that are very popular with collectors. They are easy to find in shale limestone and visitors can expect to unearth many in a short period of time, making this a great activity for children who may become easily bored otherwise. There are a variety of different trilobites, so it's fun to try to find as many as possible.

Whether you prefer to search for gold, gems, or fossilized trilobites, you will find many different treasure hunting locations available throughout the country. These activities are great for family vacations and allow children to learn more about science and the history of the world. Since the cost of mining is relatively cheap, you won't break the budget. The benefit is that you might actually find something that is worth quite a bit of money.
